Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
