Astronaut Shares Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Harassment Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the landing.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The group of women also included leaders in various fields.
The venture behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
